[He leaves a package of snacks his younger self took and hid on her doorstep: a lot of apples and little pastries. Things without their own packaging, that he recognized as food. There's a handwritten note on old-fashioned, handmade brown paper, in neat, cramped handwriting.]

Because I know him. And he won't.

And secondly, he...doesn't give up. On people, or anything else. He might very well not be straightforward with her about the fact that he cares about you, but he won't stop.

[He can't do anything about it, of course, but he means it, in his awkward way. He doesn't think he'd be able to handle another Inquisitor on board at all, even if he could flatten them. Too many years of focus and fear. He isn't even handling Vin's presence terribly well.]

[Slow and quiet and sad. Kelsier was never hope, not to him. Purpose, for a long time, and then grief. But he chose to be hope instead. Marsh only holds it against him in his weaker moments.]

[If he was an inmate, he means. Because there is no atoning for the things he has done, was too weak to stop himself being used for. Not fully, and certainly not here. Perhaps that's why he isn't one, something in the barge recognizing the futility of it. He would have given up a great deal more promptly, he thinks.]
